The Priceless Role of MOTHERS

The Priceless Role of MOTHERS

The day we celebrate the amazing women we call ‘Mother’ - by blood or by choice - is coming up very soon. I’ve been privileged to have a priceless one by blood and two additional by choice. I am very blessed to still enjoy a beautiful relationship with the mother who bore and raised me. She is a delight in every way - my friend, and I pray I have inherited her perseverance, her tenaciousness, her caring and kindness, her creativity, her optimism, and her reliance on faith. We may only text many days, but we’re always in close touch.

Margaret Redcay was my music like-a-mom. We fluted together, traveled to judging and conventions together, and could find a way to get into trouble together without much effort. I respected her, loved her, learned from her, & enjoyed our many escapades. I lost her last year and will forever cherish the relationship we had.

Joan Briggs, a.k.a. Mrs. ‘B’, was a like-a-mom in my horse world. Her daughter, Billie, is one of my dearest friends. The Briggs often joined us for holiday meals. Mrs. ‘B’ was almost obsessed with the color purple. I will forever think of her when I see it. She was loving, supportive, enthusiastic, and full of faith. We lost her last week, and will miss her dearly.

The roles these women have had in shaping us into the people we are must certainly be celebrated. If yours are still around, be grateful and treasure your time together. If they have passed, allow your many wonderful memories to comfort and buoy you, for they live on in a very real way as a part of you. Their voices are still there, encouraging and comforting, just from inside your head now.

Those of you who are just starting out in the role of Mother, know that you will one day be viewed in the same awesome way.

Happy Mother’s Day to all!
